SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH 2022 The focus for Recovery Month 2022 in Richland County, Ohio is “LOCAL HOPE FOR LOCAL RECOVERY”.
National Recovery Month (Recovery Month), which started in 1989, is a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who help make recovery possible.
This year Richland County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board and our community partners celebrate National Recovery Month with the theme “Local Hope for Local Recovery.” We are working hard to educate our community about services that are available locally.
RECOVERY HAPPENS HERE2022 Outcomes
RECOVERY: During State Fiscal Year 2022 over 9500 Richland County residents participated in prevention and educational efforts, in schools, churches and community organizations. They learned how to recognize concerns with their family and friends and how to access help when they need it. They learned that the majority of roads to recovery start with hope from someone who cares.
RECOVERY: Through our outreach efforts and supportive access, the local system touched 3,686 lives through our HELP Line, 2,641 through our Warmline, 112 through the Opiate Response Team and 177 in the first two months of the NEW Homeless Response Team. Over 6,500 people found hope coming to them or just a phone call away.
RECOVERY: Through our newest program, Behavioral Health Urgent Care, 787 accessed immediate treatment during the first 11 months. Critical services were provided to 217 people for Crisis Stabilization and an additional 255 entered Withdrawal Management. Over 1200 people started their road to recovery this year.
We enhanced the “Know It Before You Need It” initiative and increased community knowledge of available services before people need them. We are continuing to grow our “The Neighbor to Neighbor” movement, encouraging the community to be willing to see who in your life is struggling, even if that is you, and help them get help. Recovery doesn’t have quick fix, magic pill or switch to flip. The reality is recovery takes time, tenacity, training and community. Know that in Richland County, Ohio there is local help, local hope and local recovery.
As a community we encourage Richland County residents, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, and schools to be the helpers. This can be done by increasing awareness and understanding of what recovery requires, what services are available in Richland County, and how to help someone find these resources.
Through out the month of September there will be celebrations, events, and opportunities to increase your Recovery knowledge and to learn more about services and service providers available in Richland County, Ohio.

The Annual International Overdose Awareness Day will be held at Lexington Community Park. The public is invited to join this event and help spread the message that overdose deaths are preventable. A candlelight vigil, sky lantern and a drum circle will be part of the event. Toiletry items will be collected in support of New Beginnings Recovery Services.

The Richland County Commissioners will present a proclamation to the Richland County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board proclaiming September 2022 as Recovery Month in Richland County.

NAMI Connections. A support group for persons living and coping with mental health issues, will meet at the Oasis Peer Center. 87 East First Street, Mansfield. Responding to Addiction in Richland County. This is the third in a series of Town Hall Meetings sponsored by METRICH, Richland County Opiate Review Board and The Mental Health and Recovery Services Board. The event will include “Hidden in Plain Sight” from CACY, a Recovery Story, Information from METRICH, a Narcan training, information on service availability, help for families and advocacy. There will also be time at the end for questions and answers. The event will be held at Ontario High School Auditorium, 457-Shelby-Ontario Road, Ontario Ohio.

Understanding Grief, Loss and Trauma Training. The Richland Country Suicide Prevention Coalition in partnership with The Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, Catalyst Life Services and Area Agency on Aging are offering this FREE training. This training will explore how individuals can understand and help neighbors understand the process of grief, both normal and complicated, at a time when the world as a whole is experiencing so much loss. NAMI Richland County will host their Family Support Group. This will take place at the Richland County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board Office located at 87 East First Street, Mansfield. The special speaker for this meeting will be Crystal Shaffer, Nurse Manager of the Behavioral Health Unit at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. She will be sharing an update on resources and programs the hospital has to offer our loved ones.

Healing Hearts Counseling Center will be hosting a “Rock Recovery” event that is free and open to the community at 680 Park Avenue West, Mansfield. Addiction has touched many lives, but recovery has touched just as many and in a positive way. We would like to celebrate those that have been rocking recovery and celebrate the lives of those that have passed, by painting rocks in remembrance, or with a date to commemorate your clean time.

An Evening with Kevin Hines. 33 Forever in partnership with the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board and the Renaissance Theatre are thrilled to offer a free inspirational event with Kevin Hines. Mr. Hines survived a suicide attempt where he jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge. Stating that he regretted his decision “the minute I let go.” Mr. Hines has dedicated his life to telling his story of survival and encouraging people to access help before reaching this point. He is the creator and producer of the documentary “Suicide, The Ripple Effect.” He will be joined on stage, by a panel of local advocates and people with lived experience, to address the questions and answer portion of the program. This program is free to the public and will be held at the historic Renaissance Theatre. Refreshments of popcorn and soft drinks will be offered at no cost to attendees. On August 17 & 18, 2022 the METRICH Bridge Operation successful removed weapons, drugs and a vehicle. There were 30 citations issued, 13 misdemeanor drug-related arrests, four search warrants executed and 15 cell phones examined. Officials found 1,044 grams of cocaine, 44 grams of marijuana, 42 grams of fentanyl, 6 grams of crack cocaine and 40 doses of Gabapentin. In total, 53.4 pounds of pills were confiscated. The operation included 12 felony arrests, seven of them drug-related, after 153 traffic stops. There were three outreach referrals and two individuals were put into treatment, officials stated.
The goal of this initiative was to saturate areas within Richland County with Law Enforcement to interdict criminal activity and enhance safety. Focusing on high volume traffic stops in areas of reported drug activity while having resources readily available to assist if someone is encountered who is suffering from substance use disorder was the intended outcome.
METRICH Lt. Steve Blust said the operation was a success and thanked the area law enforcement agencies that participated and all the other collaborating agencies that assisted.
Blust stated the collaboration between the Richland County law enforcement agencies and the METRICH Enforcement Unit continues to have a positive impact on removing illegal drugs coming into the Mansfield, Richland County communities, while getting the proper help to those in need.
The METRICH operation received assistance from the Mansfield Police Department, Richland County Sheriff Department, Ontario Police Department, Bellville Police Department, Shelby Police Department, Butler Police Department & the Ohio State Highway Patrol partnered with the Richland County Prosecutor’s office, Richland County Courts system, Ohio Department of Public Safety, Catalyst Life Services, Richland County Public Health, Avita Ontario Hospital, Ohio Health Hospital, Richland County Mental Health & Recovery, Recovery Ohio, Ohio Narcotic Intelligence Center (ONIC) and Community Action for Capable Youth (CACY). Project Director was Mansfield Chief of Police Keith Porch.

August 2, 2021 the Richland County Mental Health & Recovery Services Boards announced the launch of The Behavioral Health Urgent Care location. Two of their contract agencies are participating in their pilot program to provide Behavioral Health access locations without an appointment. Catalyst Life Services is now expanding their offerings and hours of accessibility. Providing Behavioral Health at the time of need and avoiding unnecessary delays is a key to better outcomes. [Mansfield, Ohio], [August 30, 2019] – Mental and substance use disorders and the societal benefits of recovery for our local community must be addressed immediately, according to the Richland County Mental Health & Recovery Services Board Executive Director Joe Trolian, who today recognized September as National Recovery Month. To promote the widespread national observance, Trolian announced a calendar of events
that is a collaboration of the Board and various behavioral health providers in the Richland County community. This calendar features various events intended to support people in recovery and draw attention to critical prevention, treatment, and recovery support services.
In Fiscal Year 2018 the Richland County Mental Health & Recovery Services Board notes there were 7,135 adults aged 18 or older and 3,851 children who received services in the Richland County community. These services were delivered by Catalyst Life Services, Family Life Counseling, UMADAOP, CACY and NAMI who contracts with the Board.
The attached calendar of events notes the partnering agencies and events they will host in celebration of recovery. “It is important that the momentum we’ve established with this calendar is carried on throughout the year,” said Trolian. “We all have the potential to make a difference and be visible, vocal, and valuable to help spread the message that recovery is possible.”
This Calendar of Events is in observance of the national Recovery Month that is sponsored by SAMHSA, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The observance raises awareness of mental and substance use disorders, celebrates individuals in long-term recovery, and acknowledges the work of prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. The events are as follows:

The Richland County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board is funding a 24 hour 7 day a week Warmline for Richland County residents and contracts with Catalyst Life Services and UMADAOP for staffing. The Warmline is operated by trained call specialists who offer nonjudgmental

The class is for the family member or support person of an individual living with a mental health or addiction concern. This program gives you education on mental health conditions, treatment options and information on how to advocate for your loved one.

NAMI Richland County will host the 24th Crisis Intervention Team training for law enforcement and first responders. This training offers education on mental health issues and some extra tools for first responders on how to help persons get to support and treatment when needed.

Healing Hearts Counseling Center is pleased to host Dorrin Birch from Perrysburg, Ohio for Recovery Month. Dr. Birch (a former smoker who didn’t believe in acupuncture) is now renowned for treating individuals since the 1980’s, with nicotine addiction. Part of an addicts use
